TÜRKAK Supports Energy Efficiency through Energy Management Systems

ISO 50001 offers a scientific, measurable, and reproducible framework for delivering energy performance, cost reduction, and low-carbon goals.

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), global energy demand has increased by 23% over the past decade. During the same period, volatility in energy prices has played a decisive role in profitability, competitiveness, and sustainable growth strategies for businesses. Energy is no longer merely a cost item; it is a factor that directly affects strategic autonomy, industrial competitiveness, and societal welfare.

In this context, ISO 50001 has gained worldwide recognition for providing a scientific, measurable, and reproducible system approach to managing energy performance. Since its publication, more than 38,000 organizations have implemented ISO 50001, demonstrating that the standard:

  • is effective in improving energy performance,

  • delivers tangible financial benefits for businesses,

  • reduces carbon emissions in a measurable manner.

Multiple academic and field studies indicate that manufacturers implementing ISO 50001 achieve:

  • 15–30% reductions in energy costs,

  • significant improvements in process-level energy performance,

  • lower maintenance and repair costs,

  • substantial reductions in GHG emissions.

These outcomes stem not only from meeting the standard’s requirements but from embedding the measure–monitor–analyze–improve cycle into organizational culture. In Türkiye, TEİAŞ 2025 data show that energy costs have increased by an average of 68% over the last three years, posing a critical challenge to the sustainability of energy-intensive sectors.

This volatility underscores three realities:

  1. Energy efficiency is not a cost; it is an investment imperative.

  2. Industry must manage energy performance to remain competitive globally.

  3. ISO 50001 is the most scientific and systematic response to these needs.

In Türkiye, ISO 50001 certification is performed by bodies accredited by TÜRKAK. TÜRKAK’s accreditation framework rests on three pillars:

  • an objective and traceable audit methodology,

  • competence-focused assessment,

  • international acceptability.

Backed by Multilateral Agreements (MLA/MRA), TÜRKAK accreditation ensures the international validity of ISO 50001 certificates issued in Türkiye. The energy transition is not only an environmental necessity but also an economic imperative. In particular:

  • renewable integration in industry,

  • digital energy monitoring in processes,

  • carbon markets and compliance with the EU CBAM
are directly linked to the ISO 50001 framework.

Organizations implementing ISO 50001 benefit from:

  • lower energy costs,

  • greater competitiveness,

  • a smaller carbon footprint,

  • and a more transparent measurement and verification infrastructure.

In Türkiye’s industrial transformation, ISO 50001 is a cornerstone that enhances competitiveness, improves resource efficiency, and accelerates the green transition. Rising energy prices, climate impacts, and global competition have made energy efficiency a “survival imperative” for industry. ISO 50001 is the strongest, most systematic, and most scientific tool for this challenge. With TÜRKAK accreditation, Energy Management System certification continues to make a significant contribution to Türkiye’s energy-efficiency vision and to the sustainability journey of businesses. The energy future of industry is possible with a robust management system and reliable accreditation—and this framework is being implemented in Türkiye with firm commitment.
